Iceland and Beyond

With Halldor Larusson

Today I had the opportunity of a lifetime.  I was able to go into the inner portion of Iceland and visit the historic site where the Iceland Parliament first met.  This is the oldest Parliament in the entire modern world.  It was here that leaders in Iceland gathered, looking out over the largest lake in Iceland, and began a representative democracy–in the early 900s AD.

We are in Iceland working on establishing partnerships with a couple of ministries.  These ministries are doing the true work of the Gospel.  They are working with street people, helping them kick addictions and find peace through Jesus Christ.  They have a program that is successful in helping men and women regain control of their physical lives and go from a life of dependency to a life of service back into the community.

Additionally, Halldor is a pastor who started a new evangelical church on Easter of this year, already the church has 100 members.  This is a huge church in Europe.  I believe it will used to bring great change to the country and ultimatley to the Continent of Europe.

Pondering The Purpose Of Life

It seems to me that we have completely lost our way.  The young prophets seem to die off and the old prophets get lost in the maze of ministry, the cost of financing huge ministries that are built on man’s rather than God’s vision.  Modern ministries now survive only to ensure that our sons and daughters are left a good inheritance.  The early church was forced to live on the edge and because of that they thrived.  (Acts 2.42-47.)  That is to me the true nature of God.  Once the early Church was accepted as the state religion it began to default and fall into sin.  The first Church did not have this problem.  According to Acts 2 they were constantly together.  They had devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, and to the “breaking of bread and to prayer.”  (Acts 2.42.)  They were together and had all things in common—to the point that they were selling their property and possessions and were sharing as each had need.  (Acts 2.44-45.)  As a result of this and other acts of sincerity and devotion the scriptures record that Athe Lord was adding to their number day by day.  (Acts 2.47.)  There is no doubt that we live in a fallen world—but we are in the world not of it.  (John 15.19.)  Aren’t we?  Where does it all end?  When will the church regain her voice?  Will we recognize the Church’s voice when we hear it?  Will it be valid, not for this generation, but for the calling of God?  This is not a call for the older generation to move out of the way and let the younger generation take their place, this is a call to have us all move out of the way and let God take our place.

Then we create more doubt—will we recognize the voice of God when He speaks?  Will we listen to the voice of God once we recognize it?  Will we obey the command of God when it goes against the voice of wisdom and reason that our leaders teach us with?  It is often quoted that power corrupts—absolute power corrupts absolutely.  I first read that reading the works of Karl Hess.  He was quoting others, but the principle is true.  And it has crept into the world of ministry and the Church.  Those with power seldom give it up easily—even when faced with the truth.  Do not be confused, this is not a call to revolution within the Church.  The revolution has already occurred at Calvary.  This is a call to anti-revolution—a call to follow the tried and tested path set out by God from the foundation of the world.  This is not revolutionary—this is the simple wisdom we have lost.  Fortunately, that which was lost can always be found.  The only problem that remains is whether we will recognize it once we find it.

We must remember that it is not the mighty things of man that impress God—rather it is the humble things of man that impress God.  After all, He created the universe and everything in it—knowing that, even our greatest achievements pale next to the works of God.  Why then do we spend so much time trying to impress God and each other with our power and wisdom?

Thus, the beginning of everything is to see how small and insignificant we really are next to God—and then to see ourselves as God sees us, the most valuable of His creations.  Next, we must see others as God sees them.  Once we see our neighbors through God’s eyes, then we will have no place to hold onto our prejudices.  You see, eternity judges the actions of this temporal life differently than we do.  We must put on eternal eyes if we ever hope to understand the purpose of life.  An ant cannot understand the history of man—regardless of its brainpower the ant’s span of life is so short that only temporal matters make sense.  Eternity is just too long to understand.  This is the opposite of man’s problem.  Our lives span just enough time that we often come to believe that eternity is not reality.  The things of this life become all encompassing leaving us void without any understanding of who we are and why we are here.  I am not sure this discussion is capturing the entirety of my thoughts so let me give an example.

Abraham Lincoln was killed in 1865 by an assassin.  The bullet stopped his life short of its natural end and this has to be considered tragic.  Though Lincoln did not live to old age, and his death was tragic to the temporal mind, he died for something he believed in, something eternal rather than temporal—the freedom of man and the value of America as a nation.  His death helped to seal both of those ideals in the American mind set and indeed in the rest of the world.  Had he lived, it might have been better for him and his immediate family, but what value can we place on the life of a martyr.  His martyrdom increased his value to this country and to the world.  Now every person alive at the time of Lincoln’s death is no longer living.  Even if Lincoln had not been shot he would now be dead.  Does the loss of five, or ten, or even twenty years mean anything to Mr. Lincoln now?  Clearly it does not because regardless of how he died he would now be dead.  What seemed so horrible then was only the quickening of the inevitable.  Lincoln gave his life for what he believed in and thus outlived himself.  Many men and women in that time did not give their lives for something they believed in.  They are just as dead as President Lincoln physically; however, they are deader than he is spiritually.  That is the difference in the eternal and the temporal.  Most of those who lived with Lincoln are forgotten.  Lincoln, however, is still one of the most revered names in all of American and even world history.  He may have understood the difference in the eternal and the temporal, I don’t know, but his life certainly reflects an understanding.

Coming Storms In Germany

I do a lot of religious liberties work in Europe.  It is not by choice as much as that is where the cases are.  Last year I was out of the country six times, five of those times found me in Germany for some matter or another related to my work.  When I stopped and saw the numbers I had to ask myself why this was so.

The answer was reinforced recently when I met with a businessman who was born in Germany but lives in America.  He spends a lot of time in Germany, in fact, more than me.  As we were talking he told me that he believes that Germany is the heart of the European Union.

There is no doubt that this is true on an economic level.  It is also true on a political level.  I think it is also true on a spiritual level.  Germany is the home of the Reformation.  The Germany culture has given us great music and great religion.  The German culture has given us great engineering.  They have shown us how to rebuild a thriving economic from the ashes of economic and social ruin.

I believe Germany is the epicenter for the transformation of Europe on a spiritual level.  We will see success in Europe only when we see a new Reformation in Germany.  This means that Germany is possibly the most important country in the world as far as Christians are concerned.

There are a lot of reasons to believe that.  There are also a lot of reasons why you would not believe that.

I believe that one of the reasons we are experiencing such legal battles on religious liberties issues in Germany is because Germany is so important on this front.  If we lose Germany we will likely lose the rest of the European Union.

On a political level, if we are not careful Germany will start to look east for the first time since before the Second World War.  Germany is under pressure to align with Russia.  We must be careful not to give Germany a reason to do so.

Over the years there have been a variety of cases involving human rights and religious liberties in Germany.  These cases have involved the government improperly revoking the tax-exempt status of an independent church, pastors being accused of tax evasion (the charges were later dropped after they were rigorously defended), home school families who have been persecuted on a variety of levels, and even people charged with criminal charges for expressing their religious beliefs in public places.  These cases are but a precursory to what is coming to Germany.

In the 90s the German Parliament created a secret committee called the Commission of Inquiry.  This Commission was charged with investigating religious organizations and, without giving them the courtesy of defending themselves, this Commission created a secret list of “dangerous sects” that was never released publicly, yet, everyone knew who was on the list.  This list led to problems for a number of legitimate religious organizations.

Good and bad, Germany tends to lead the European Union, and thus much of the world.

A Conspiracy Of Sin

I have spent a lot of time over the years with people who have a great belief in the power of conspiracies.  Now, I am the first to admit that conspiracies are sexy.  We want to believe that some small group of really smart people is manipulating the world to its own end—some times it might be a good end and some times it might be a bad end.  It makes for great movies.  It keeps us wondering what really went on in the Kennedy assassination.  Without conspiracy theories the Internet would have less traffic, email chains would begin to dry up.

In the spiritual world the same thing happens.  We find ourselves wanting to believe that the Free Masons are behind a conspiracy that is manipulating the world toward evil.  We hear that the Catholic Church is part of the conspiracy of the Free Masons.  It is exciting.  There is a certain enticement when we look at these hidden agendas.

Recently a friend of mine, a lawyer in South Georgia, asked me who I thought was driving some of the changes going on around the world.  Is there a group that is trying to change our culture by pushing an agenda for same-sex marriage, for example?

I told Tom what I often tell people.  I know a lot of really smart people.  And I do not know anyone smart enough (apologies to my friends, I really do think you are smart) to hold together a vast conspiracy over decades—and keep it secret.  Even less I do not know anyone smart enough to organize and hold together a vast conspiracy that expands over centuries—especially if they have to keep it secret.

There is one vast international conspiracy that is going forward and has been since the beginning of recorded time on earth.  It is a conspiracy of sin.  According to our belief as Christians there is a spiritual war that is going on.  It is a war between God and Satan.  It is a war that is being waged for the souls of men and women around the world.  It is a war where the winner takes all.

This is the only conspiracy I believe in.  It is real, but it is not made within the organizations of man.  It is a conspiracy that some times uses the organizations of man to further its own end.

This is probably not the best news for us.  It would be better for us if there was some super secret group controlling and manipulating everything.  Then we could find a way to stop it.

The only way to stop this conspiracy is the one way we seem so resistant to—we have to give ourselves completely to God through Jesus and join the spiritual war against sin.

A war that painfully begins inside me—and you.
